Signs of the Times

Chloe Kono

My work usually centers around happy subject matter— colorful carousel horses, clowns with the biggest smile, yummy ice-cream and fun juggling balls etc. Not because I’m ecstatic 24-7 (cos’ that’d be psychotic), but because I believe that the world is such an overwhelming place, it is incredibly easy to get swallowed by dark thoughts. Therefore, every ounce of cheer would come in handy. I love that my jewelry could bring joy to people and remind them how simple it should be.

However, once in a while, digging into what truly bothers us is also needed, no matter how confusing or hurtful that might be.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong and I moved to Los Angeles when I was eighteen, meaning that I had no idea what it was like to be a minority growing up. The concept of having extra obstacles in life because of my ethnicity was not something I would even think of. My experience of interaction with non Chinese people were pleasant. They were my aunt’s dear friends from London, friendly English teachers or speakers at school, and happy tourists who asked for direction. They were different from me, yes, but they never made me feel inferior because of it.

After moving to LA, I was still clueless and extremely slow to pick up on the existence of racism. If someone repeated something to me dramatically slow because I didn’t catch it the first time, they were just being nice, weren’t they? If someone assumed that the car that was parked in between two spots must be mine, they were just being funny, weren’t they? If someone who always showed up late and took long breaks and was just generally lousy got promoted even though they were less experienced or efficient than I was, they must be better in other areas, weren’t they? If someone thought I was beautiful only because I got dark hair, almond eyes and tiny breasts, I must be just coincidently their type, wasn’t I?

Because if I thought the answers were NO, HONEY to any of the above, then I must be just too sensitive.

It’s mind-blowing how racism is such a rooted problem that even the victims are somehow brainwashed to think that all the wrongful little things are just something to shrug off. But I was lucky to have the choice, though not the best one, to shrug it off because what I have experienced or observed was comparatively insignificant.

Never have I ever imagined that I would live in a time that an elderly would get attacked in broad daylight just because he was Asian. Oh, and what comes after throwing rocks? Burning us on wooden stakes?

It is time to wake up and address the severeness of it before all the things that I thought I could shrug off become something irreversible like a buried coffin, and this might as well be the darkest pun of all.

To process all the anger, fear, sadness and frustration I’ve generated reading all the recent hate crimes news, including additional murders of black people and transgender people. I’ve created the following two pieces.

No matter how distorted the concept of right and wrong has become

Participating in this year’s metals challenge hosted by @metalartssociety MASSC, I've used 7 out of 8 given materials to create this piece as instructed and I'm pleased with the result. If I do win any of the four prizes, 50% of it will be donated to National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association
@naapimha , supporting the ongoing battle against anti AAPI hate crimes.

Not a style preference but an eternal fact
Ignorance isn't a license for violence
Exclusion doesn't make one elite
In times of chaos, please look for huggers
At moments of despair, please be reminded that love is still in the air

So dear racists, love us, don’t love us, I honestly don’t give a shit. We are not looking for your approval to exist. We are reminding you that this isn’t The Stone Age, and you can’t go around bashing people’s heads because you are convinced that we stole your stupid dinosaurs. Please kindly pull your heads outta your buttocks. Thank you very much.

How It's Started, How It's Going

Chloe Kono

About a year ago, I finally convinced myself that I was ready to be a full-time jewelry artist, literally right before Covid shut the world down. All of the shows I’ve planned to do, some already paid for, were canceled. Shops that I started to or planned to do consignments with, were either closed temporarily or permanently.

I spent weeks moping around with a dark cloud of discouragement over my head, feeling like the world was against my pursuit of happiness. But that’s not exactly interesting or original. What I would like to talk about however, is what came after that.

I didn’t quit my nine-to-five to stay miserable. I didn’t ever expect it to be smooth, although it definitely went a LITTLE more challenging than I could ever imagine. Yet, despite all uncertainties, my stubbornness came in handy. I wasn’t going to give up before I properly tried.

So I switched gears. I stopped crying over all the can’t dos and started to focus on all the can dos. Instead of getting frustrated and mortified from not being able to see the big picture, I actually turned micro. I hopped from one little goal to the next, didn’t allow myself to get drowned in the fuzziness of the unknown. And boy, what a game changer!

Here are a little review of things I was able to accomplished after that crucial mental switch.

And you know damn right, there is no stopping me now! On that note, I will end this post by inviting you to check out a joyful online event: A Sappy Birthday Show!

I don't remember how or when exactly I discovered Cactus Gallery, but this piece sums up my relationship with her.

Making art is easy because that's what I do, with or without people knowing about it. Being an artist and trying to connect with the world through what I make is however absolutely terrifying. Not only because I have to allow myself to be vulnerable, and to take the chance of being criticized, ranked or judged. But because most importantly, that could lead to disappointment, and then a disconnection with my craft. That, would be the worst.

Stumbling across Cactus and showcasing my creation through her, I feel very much like a jumpy stray cat walking into an adoption center, and finding my forever home through them.

I imagine that's what La Casa Linda is like to many other artists who have been encouraged, helped and promoted by Sandra through the past 16 years.

Thank you for caring about us, and always believing in us.
How's that for sappy?

So in hindsight, not that Covid is exactly over, but I am proud of all these little baby steps I took. If you have been following my adventure, I thank you for caring and for cheering me on from afar. Hope you too are giving yourself some credit for all the things you’ve overcome and achieved. Sending you lots of love and virtual hugs♥️♥️♥️

Old Friends Reconnected & New Friends Made

Chloe Kono

This is an exciting month! Not only is it my birthday month, it turns out to be a month of celebrating friendship, too! I have reconnected with Sandra and Alfonso from the Cactus Gallery, who have been supportive of my making for many years and I cannot thank them enough for what they do, not only for me but for numerous makers of all kinds of media.

It has been forever since I’ve participated in a show for obvious reasons but finally, DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!!!!!! I am beyond thrilled to be one of the 40 artists showcasing in the upcoming Cactus Gallery online group show on the 20th, and you are invited!!

The theme of the show is friendship, and what it really means to us. I personally can't wait to look at everybody's interpretation.

And for me, after a year of not being able to see and hug my friends, the pain from the lack of joy and stimulation resulting from that is immense.

So here is my take.

Title: Embrace
Materials: copper, sterling silver, stainless steel, brass, lapis lazuli, tourmalated quartz

The essence of friendship to me is the complete embrace of our whole being.

The smile we wear when we see each other.
The tears we shed when we break our hearts.
The numerous inside jokes.
The deep dark secrets.

The admiration of our strengths as well as the acceptance of our flaws. The fuel we use to battle our own demons.

A special space we occupy in each other's mind, and the unbearable void when we aren't in each other's lives.

I hope that the temporary physical boundaries we have had to set up in order to get through this pandemic, and the pain from all aspects of it will somehow bring us all closer together than we’ve ever imagined.

Please mark the date, and go to the link below to see what other artists’ creations are, and reach out to Sandra for pre-sale information and pricing inquiry.

In addition, I have also made some new friends! Special thanks to Karen, Gwen and Cathy from the Creative Arts Group, who are welcoming me as one of their represented artists of the gallery located in Sierra Madre. Their organization offers different art classes for all ages! From ceramics, drawing and painting, jewelry making, and enameling. You name it! These classes are for all ages no matter your level and experience. Due to Covid, the classes are now available outdoor and/or online!

Hope we are all seeing the light at the end of the looooooooooong crappy tunnel, and we get to hug each other real soon!! Meanwhile, stay safe, stay sane, stay flexible.

Mushroom Farm Tour

Chloe Kono

Kicking off the new year with some shimmery magic…well…more like shroomy magic to be precise. You’re invited to watch me make more of these colorful, whimsical and strange looking fungi for the next BENCH TIME WITH THE CLAW at my little metal studio.

Friday, Jan 15th, 6PM PT, join me LIVE on Instagram , where I’ll be piercing, forming, coloring and chitchatting about new year resolutions, or lack thereof. Hey, new age, new recipes yet to perfect. Chloeography is a judgement free zone. (Except for jerks. Jerks are exempt.)

Alrighty, hope to see you then!

🍄First batch of shroomy necklaces are now available at Stay Home Friend Burbank and my shop online🍄

Footprints in the City of Angels

Chloe Kono

I’m a touch and feel everything kind of shopper. So Covid life definitely saves me a lot of money because it’s just a little less fun while the safe shopping experience has become mostly virtual. However, with the vaccine coming out and people (the sensible ones of course) are feeling slowly but surely more at ease to resume a somewhat normal lifestyle, I too am slowly but surely returning to placing my work at stores that I like in Los Angeles.

Hello 2021. Let’s start with these two:

Stay Home Friend Burbank

Previously known as Mindfulnest

3319 W Magnolia Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505

(818) 840-0123

Amanda Vernon is the girl boss of this gem. She has been working with local artists since 2009 and has always been supportive of the makers’ community. Visit her cozy and inviting store, check out my jewelry and hundreds of other goodies from home decor, greeting cards, books, apparel and more.

Sumi’s

at Los Feliz

1812 N Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027

(323) 660-0869

Owner Sumi Siegel started selling her mother Carita’s beautiful handmade bags from Finland back in 1999. By chance, she found the perfect location in the heart of Los Feliz and started her retail business in 2005. Sumi’s is known for high quality and unique jewelry as well as tasteful home decor and accessories, many of them animal themed.

Both stores have a limited traffic capacity and require customers to wear masks to enter. They also have handmade masks with gorgeous fabric available in store for purchase. Please be considerate and cautious, and have a great time supporting local businesses!

Pop Up Virtual Shop: Chloeography X Harshmallows

Chloe Kono

In the perfect world, every guest gets a big squishy hug from us, but meanwhile, let’s meet across the almighty interweb! Next Saturday, Dec 19th at 12pm noon (Pacific Time), the hubby Mr. Randy Kono and I will be showcasing some of our latest artwork and answering questions you might have about them! All pieces presented will be ready to ship for the procrastinating Christmas shoppers and gift wrapping option will be available.

To participate, all you have to do is to go onto either mine or his Instagram page and join our live video on the 19th! Ugly sweaters optional, smiley faces mandatory.

Can’t wait to hang out!!!

That's a Wrap, people!

Chloe Kono

Actually, there are two kinds of wraps I’d like to talk to you about this month!

First of all, the Halloween Spooky Collection 2020 👻is a fantastic wrap!! I haven’t been this inspired and productive since FOR-ER-VERRRRR!! It sure feels amazing to be creating, all day everyday! I am eternally grateful to have found the amazing and all rounded artist Mab Graves and her annual Mab’s Drawlloween Club. It is an all month long drawing (or other media) prompt that she creates every year to help like-minded creatives to keep making and sharing, and to inspire each other. The community is filled with loving, supportive and talented souls, which I cannot be happier to have found.

Here are the spooky gang~

All pieces are available for purchase except one that isn’t for sale and a few that are sold. To read more about any particular piece, check out my Instagram posts!

The other wrap that I need to tell you about is the HOLIDAY GIFT WRAP!!!!!

Did you know that I have a gift wrapping problem? As in I have so much fun with them I just wanna wrap everything up.

When I was a kid, sometimes I had to wait at dad's office for what I thought was forever and I got pretty good at entertaining myself. One time, I used the A4 papers from the copy machine and wrapped everything in sight. Stapler, pens, rulers, erasers, and whatever my little claws could handle.

I wasn't there when the staffs came in the next day but sometimes I imagined their confused faces and I still chuckle.

And for the jolly season around the corner, 🎁HOLIDAY GIFT WRAPPING IS NOW AVAILABLE🎁
...and now you know how excited I am 🤣

With overwhelming demand for online shopping in literally all fields imaginable, shipping time is frankly out of sellers' control. But don't panic! Instead of stressing out last minute, shop early and have fun with it. The thoughts, love and care you put into selecting special gifts for your loved ones help to make up all the hugs and kisses you wish you could have given them throughout this incredibly challenging year.

🎉Let's celebrate how much we have overcome and accomplished despite of the hardship.

Want another reason to smile? All earrings are now on 20% sale, for your flaunting needs in all your upcoming virtual gatherings!!

And…that’s a wrap for this month’s updates of Chloeography!

Joint Live Stream with Erin Proctor from Saturn 5 Studio 🪐

Chloe Kono

Hey friends, what are you doing next Wednesday?? Not sure yet? I got something for you! You can join me at a joint live stream studio session with my smith buddy Erin and I for an evening of metal making fun!

Erin and I met at our alma mater, CSULB back in 2006. We have shared the space, tools and equipments in the metal major studio, along with the blood-pressure-rising deadline stress and the dopamine-inducing satisfaction when projects got done. Almos…

Erin and I met at our alma mater, CSULB back in 2006. We have shared the space, tools and equipments in the metal major studio, along with the blood-pressure-rising deadline stress and the dopamine-inducing satisfaction when projects got done. Almost a decade and a half later, we somehow haven’t gotten sick of each other and we continue to bug each other with smith-related questions, general life hacks and more. (Mostly me with the questions and she with all the answers though I have to confess.)

Fun fact: I rewarded her by making her one of my beautiful bridesmaids 😂

And since this neverending Covid life is provoking all the anxiousness that inevitably eats up some of our creative juice, I thought it would be fun to invite her to join me, make a kitty piece, and chill the fuck out (sorry, not sorry).

I will be making a memorial piece inspired by my forever love Peanut a.k.a. Farsi, and Erin will be giving us a surprise.

Voyage LA Hidden Gems & August Sale!!

Chloe Kono

I gotta tell you TWO exciting things this month! Woohoo!! And this first is this…

Screen Shot 2020-08-05 at 1.21.15 PM.png

I work with gems all day! Never have I ever thought of being considered one of them! I would love to express my gratitude for being nominated by Deaven Machingo, who’s definitely also another hidden gem maker in LA, and to have been chosen by the editorial team of Voyage LA Magazine to be featured.

If you have a minute, please check out the interview and make my day by clicking HERE. And if you know of anybody who you consider a hidden gem, feel free to nominate them, too!

Book Photo Plain Collage Instagram Post (1).jpg

The second Woohoo is that the Summer Sale ( <<< Yes click that ) is up and running now for the month of August! A wonderful chance for you to spend that extra travel fund dough you now don’t know what to do with!

Thanks for keeping in touch! Stay healthy until we can actually hug!

Is your house this fun right now?

Chloe Kono

2020 has been… extremely eventful and uneventful at the same time. Whether you are working as “usual”, working from home, going out protesting, staying in learning and listening, or simply just taking it one day at a time trying not to get emotionally overwhelmed, I hope that you are nonetheless healthy and safe.

I have been, well, now more than ever, channeling my anxiety into making wearable art. I am thrilled to show you my new mini series THE FUN HOUSES!!

The limited edition FUN HOUSE series is dedicated to this crazy year 2020.

A lot is going on, and we may have different views, but I am not here to debate who’s right and who’s wrong. I am here to remind you that no matter what you believe in and how your mama taught you, there is ALWAYS room for improvement for oneself.

This body of work is inspired by that. Self reflection.
Cue our beloved MJ!! If you want to make the world a better place. Take a look at yourself, and then make a change. Easier said than done, yup, cause our egos are pretty loud and obnoxious. But all we gotta do is to keep practicing.

These mixed media pieces are made out of sterling silver, 14k goldfilled, different types of stones and a real mirror set in resin. They'll distort your silly faces, and trigger your giggle button!

Hopefully these playful pieces can serve as a reminder of how we can give ourselves the power and the faith, to be strong enough to keep doing what we need to do, unlearn what we shouldn’t be doing, and continue to spread, not virus, but love and compassion.

30% of the proceeds will be donated to American Civil Liberties Union, which defends the fundamental rights outlined in the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

COVID Life Survival 101: Plan the Unplannable

Chloe Kono

I know, I know, it’s quite silly that I still insist on using my 2020 planner although everything that was preplanned is now impossible to execute. But is it really though? I can’t say that I am a brand new person because of COVID-19, but if it has sparked any inspiration at all, it is probably my ability to adapt.

Notice that being able to adapt isn’t the same as blindly accepting every unwanted thing. It is what you can make the best of under imperfect situations, and what might take an unexpected and uplifting turn. If it wasn’t for COVID, I might be forever making excuses for not putting effort into all my online platforms. I would have kept on making my artisan jewelry but probably putting off posting them online because I enjoy doing shows in person more. If it wasn’t for COVID, I would not have over 160 pieces on my Etsy store instead of the same 40 that I’ve had since the dawn of time. For a wholesale kind of store, 160 is absolutely nothing, but for one of a kind handcrafted pieces from one person, ya I’ve been one hell of a busy bee. If it wasn’t for COVID, I would not have stepped outside of my comfort zone and started doing LIVE videos and found out that there is in fact a small audience! If it wasn’t for COVID, I would not have been active enough for a casting director from the NBC show Making It to approach me and ask me to apply to be on it. No I didn’t get selected but instead of getting discouraged, I feel exactly the opposite. I now really believe that I have made the right decision to quit my 9 to 5 and am truly on the right path.

So here are a few things I have learned during the quarantine lifestyle. It might help you too!

  • Make Plans Anyways
Well, obviously not travel plans or bar hopping plans just yet. Make plans that will give you some structure to follow, a reason to get out of bed, a sense of accomplishment. I don’t always complete every task I write on my planner, but I give the effort every day and I am positive that I do end up feeling better because I know that I got some of them done and did not waste my life away. I didn’t make ravioli that Saturday but here’s an example:

thumbnail_20200503_140427.jpeg
  • Stay Active Physically
Dance, yoga, HIIT, jumping jacks, squat with your fat cat in the arms… It doesn’t matter what, all I know is that sweating off the stress is extremely effective. The side effects? Better skin and amazing abs. Duh! Please and thank you.

  • Put on the Peace Maker Hat
You are bound to get irritated by your spouse/kids/parents/roommates/pets at some point for something because you simply get a lot more time with them. Tune down that self-righteousness (but don’t lose it, you’ll need a little bit of that in order not to get walked all over by assholes you’ll run into later), and give your best to respect that everyone has their own thoughts and their own needs and although sometimes they may clash with yours, no one is trying to hurt you intentionally. So when my visual merchandiser head takes over and the sight of a collapsing pile of shirts in the hubby’s side of the closet makes me cringe, I try to remember that he’s washing dishes.

  • Stay Groomed
Do your makeup if you want! Put on that sexy dress, use that fancy beard oil! You don’t have to have a date to feel beautiful. It’s just a little mood booster trick. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t pointless. It is the best way to love your loved ones. Ask your mom if I’m right. I dare you. (Ya call her! Mother’s day is in a week!)

  • Be Creative
This sounds broad and general but what I am trying to focus on is what I can do instead of what I can’t do. Ironically, the idealistic artists are gonna struggle the most with this. Comfort zones are for people who want to stop living. Yes I miss fresh sushi, but hey, I now know how to make fresh pasta! It is fascinating what that attitude can bring. My ballet teacher started offering online classes since the quarantine order, and next thing you know, he is reconnected to his old students who now reside in New York, Ohio and Beijing!

  • Stay Home and Shop Online, and Shop Wisely
Quarantine sucks, that’s universally agreed. Everyone copes differently. I cannot stop people from interpreting “liberty” as irresponsibility, but I can do my part and wear my mask, and support small businesses by spending a few more minutes to look for them instead of going on the big store websites by default. I’m actually thinking of friends’ birthdays ahead of time just so I can shop now and contribute to small stores that are on the verge of closing. You don’t need to spend more than what you normally would, but choosing where to shop makes a difference. I am not saying that all Corporate CEOs are heartless and talentless, some might actually have earned their success. But I know that COVID is only gonna affect a few digits in their bank accounts but not their lifestyle, while it is literally threatening small business owners’ ability to bring food to the table.

So even though you might not be able to travel, dine out, and party your hearts out, please don’t curl up into a human slug ball in bed and give up. You are not alone, and damn it WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS!!

One more thing:

My weekly studio video #BenchTimewithTheClaw has been really fun yet many have expressed that the Wednesday afternoon time slot doesn’t quite work with their schedule, and others have said that they aren’t on Instagram and feel a bit excluded. So I have decided to mix things up, it will be weekly, yet it will take different formats. Some will remain LIVE, others prerecorded and stay available. Most will be behind the scene session at the studio but some will be a total surprise. Alright, I love it. Variety is the spice of life!

And for this week, Wednesday May 6th 8pm PT, in order to get myself outta that pity party because of all the canceled shows, I will be showcasing my work at home via Instagram and Facebook. It’ll be almost like you’re at my show, just claim your hugs later when the world resumes. Follow me @chloeography and stay tune!!

Take care. Much love. Call your mom.

Mother's Day is just around the corner!

Chloe Kono

This isn't just another year.

Year 2020

20% off
Mother’s Day Sale

I don't think I have to remind you that this isn't exactly a fun time right now. None of us have ever imagined that we would go through a pandemic in our life time. Christ, some of us might have to look up WTF the word "pandemic" means. It sucks, that's one way to put it. Yet, it is a great opportunity for many to reflect on ourselves, and remember what is truly important in our lives.

Don't take your loved one's TLC for granted.

If you live with your mom, be glad that you get to hug her during this upside down time. If you don't live with her, make sure you check up on her, and do whatever you can do to let her know that you do appreciate everything she's done for you. Yes, that's including the nagging. Here are a few ways to do so:

  • Call her.

  • Send food to her.

  • TP her.

  • Buy her a piece of unique artisan jewelry and brighten up her day.

To make the last option easier for you, I will be running a 20% off SALE on my Etsy shop starting from now to Mother's Day. New pieces will be uploaded constantly. Don't miss out!

Introducing: Bench Time with the Claw

Chloe Kono

You know the days when your fridge is almost empty but you end up making the most amazing dish with only two random ingredients? That is how I want to look at this quarantine life. Do I struggle? Yes. Do I prefer social distancing on my own terms? Yes. Do I miss sushi? Holy shit yes! But can I make the best out of it? Well you bet your ass I am gonna try! That is basically how Bench Time with the Claw was born.

Hmmm….what the hell is Bench Time with the Claw? Glad you asked. It is my best attempt at keeping myself productive, content, and in touch with the outside world. My jeweler bench has always been my happy place and the antidote of my anxiety. Now more than ever, I need it like an infant needs her mama’s boobies. So, for the past two Wednesdays, I have gone LIVE on Instagram for an hour or so, just to make stuff like I always do, but also to hang out and chat with my friends and followers who kindly showed up. I didn’t know exactly what to expect but I didn’t allow myself to overthink it, because I tend to scare myself off if I put too much thought into it. If you ever wonder why my forehead (some call it fivehead) is so big, it’s probably because it’s a vessel for my excessive thoughts.

Say cheese!

These are the pieces I made during last week’s BTC. A block of brooch, two chunks of mismatch earrings, and a thick slice of necklace.

I am very grateful to learn that the little live studio time was well received. The positive, constructive and even funny feedback encouraged me to keep sharing my world with the world!

Tomorrow, I will be horsing around with some patina finishing! Coloring is such a therapeutic process and I invite you all to join me at noon on my Instagram page.

Stay home and stay healthy! Tune in and stay inspired! Oh, last but not least, BYOB guys, nobody’s driving and the sky is unrealistically blue!!
